The Laborie Q model double bass came about as a collaboration between Christian Laborie, (master bass maker) and two well known bass teachers George Vance and Peter McLachlan. The aim was to design an instrument with the dimensions and tonal characteristics that would allow students to develop as soloists but also provide an instrument that would be useful for orchestra and other styles of playing. There are many shapes and sizes of double basses and unfortunately many of these designs are not intelligent choices for dedicated students who are keen to play professionally or as serious amateurs. The Q Bass is German made from fine European tone woods, ebony fittings and high quality Rubner French machine heads. The fingerboard is carved precisely to allow easy access to the instrument in all positions and is ideal for learning the Rabbath Technique. It comes with a Laborie Belgium bridge and the Laborie tailpiece which are essential for sound production. The bass is assembled by Bass Works in Australia and finished with a traditional oil varnish that is usually reserved for much more expensive instruments. It has a 104cm stop (41 inches). A French Bass inspired by Francois Rabbath's Quenoil bass. Back in 2006 when Francois Rabbath was visiting we measured his bass and have now made several instruments based on the dimensions of this instrument. This is the most recent and is made from flamed European maple and bearclaw spruce. It has a raised saddle, lightweight Laborie tailpiecce, Belguim bridge and rosewood handles on the Rubner French machine heads. The fingerboard is angled in slightly making the player more comfortable and the neck is thin and easy to play but strong. (reinforced with a carbon fibre truss rod) It has a powerful focused sound and demonstrates the high standard of Ben McLachlan's workmanship. Ben is a maker in his early 20's and has a bright future ahead of him as a luthier. Price:
